Hyper v Hypo in Type 1 Diabetes

We hear these terms a lot, but what do they mean? Here we discuss hypo v hyper.

Hypo

Hypo, short for hypoglycemia, is when your blood sugar levels get too low, usually below 4 mmol/L. Its like your body is running out of energy, making you feel shaky, sweaty, confused or hungry. Your body needs a hypo treatment - a fast-acting carbohydrate treatment like a glucose shot, glucose tablets, sugary drink, orange juice or 3 jelly babies to help bring your blood sugar up quickly. After taking a fast-acting treatment you may need to eat some food as well - your doctor or dietician will discuss the best options for you.

Hyper

Being Hyper is when your blood sugar levels are too high, usually above 7 mmol/L. Its like having too much fuel in your system. You may feel thirsty, tired and need to wee more often as your body is trying to flush it out. To bring your blood sugar down, you may need to adjust your insulin dose and drink water.

With both of these conditions, always follow your doctor's advice as both diet and exercise affects diabetes type 1.

How can I prevent complications?

Managing blood sugar levels by monitoring and making insulin adjustments and adopting lifestyle changes is crucial for people with type 1 to prevent complications. Have regular health reviews with your health care professional.
